To Up & Coming Authors From Tony Wells
KEEP A JOURNAL: 1) Well, I'm
no
expert in book writing or anything but one thing I can suggest that
made it much easier for me to write my memoirs is that you should keep
a daily journal. Yup, you read it right. I highly recommend that
everyone keep a journal and write down everything you do on a daily
basis.
Even if you're not planning on writing any book right now.. you never know how you may feel in the future.. so, in my opinion its a great idea to just write down the stuff you do every day. I started keeping my journal in January 1989 and my biggest regret is that I really WISH I would have started it much, much earlier in my life. Its really amazing now when I'm reading through my journal because I can just pick a date.. say, ten years ago or whatever.. and when I read it it's as if it happened YESTERDAY! I can so easily recall everything just because of the fact that I wrote it all down. You should bring your journal with you everywhere, even when you're traveling, so you don't forget to write everything you did and that happens to you. Sometimes I even tape maps or photos or whatever I want inside it so I can remember even better. What I want to do now is to ask my kids to start keeping a journal for themselves. Can you imagine how you would feel when you're say, middle aged, and are reading the stuff you wrote and the things that happened to you when you were just a kid? Personally, I would think it would be a really incredible feeling that would instantly bring you back to those days when you were young, had the wildest imagination and the whole world in front of you. Go for it! WRITE INTERESTING EVENTS DOWN NOW: 2) Since most of you probably didn't keep any journal, another good thing to do right now is to start writing down ASAP all the interesting things that happened to you throughout your life. Do it now.. before you forget. I suggest you keep a pen and notepad handy at all times (even next to your bed when you're sleeping) because, in my case, most of the times when I suddenly remembered something it was in the middle of the night or when I just woke up after sleeping. This was how I recorded and wrote down most of the things that happened to me prior to keeping a journal in 1989. TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME: 3) If you do decide to write a book about your life, just take it one step at a time, chapter by chapter. Don't think too hard about how to put it all together at first. Just simply start writing the events chapter by chapter, one step at a time and it will all come together in the end. Well, I guess that's it for now. Good luck to all of you potential writers out there and see you at the book store! Questions or Comments? Please email me at ![]() |
